Chandigarh, January 31 (DNS)- People's Party of Punjab chief Manpreet Singh Badal has thanked voters of the state for having come out and voted in large numbers. "The large turnout showed the anger of the voter not only with the existing government, but also with the SAD and the Congress meery-go-round every five years" he said.
He said there was a clear indication that people wanted change. "Also, our state has a young population and youngsters coming out to vote in large numbers shows that there has been a clear disconnect between their aspirations and the state policies ", he said.
"I have been very humbled by the love and affection that has come to me from Punjabis all over. I can't think of a political party formed less than a year before the poll emerging a potent third alternative in state politics. When I think, the rationale of this support, I guess it stems from the fact that for the first time, people of Punjab, found an option which they could describe their own PPP, is their political party- one which is based on their values, their feedback, their aspirations and their vision for the state", he added.
"A few days back, I was interacting with my young supporters on internet, and many of them said, that they were specially coming from far off distances just to cast their votes. NEW DELHI, January 29 (Doaba News Service)- Punjab and Uttarakhand will vote on Monday to elect new assemblies with the Congress hoping to oust the Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combine in the country's grain bowl and the BJP in the hill state.
According to the Election Commission, 1.76 crore voters are eligible to vote in the 117 constituencies of Punjab in the second round of five-state elections that began on Saturday. The voter population is around 6.3 million in Uttarakhand, which has a 70-member house.
In Punjab, the Congress led by former chief minister Amarinder Singh has levelled major charges of corruption against the government of Parkash Singh Badal. Most seats in Punjab will see a triangular contest between the ruling SAD-BJP alliance, the Congress and the Sanjha Morcha, which includes the Left and People's Party of Punjab (PPP) led by Manpreet Badal, a nephew of the chief minister who broke away from the Akali Dal.
The main contestants include Badal (Lambi), Amarinder Singh (Patiala city), Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal (Jalalabad) and Amarinder's son Raninder Singh (Samana). Congress leader and former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal has been fielded from Lehra.
Two former officials, D.S. Guru, who was principal secretary to the chief minister, and P.S. Gill, a former director general of police, are contesting from Bhadaur and Moga respectively.

Badal, May 25 (DNS)- Setting differences aside, Gurdas Badal and his son Manpreet Badal, President, People's Party of Punjab, were among the first to reach the house of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to mourn the death of his wife Surinder Kaur Badal late last evening.
Gurdas Badal and Manpreet Badal stayed with Parkash Singh Badal for some time before they left for their house.
Since Manpreet had parted company with his uncle Parkash Singh Badal a few months back, they came to Badal’s residence for the first time.
Manpreet, who was in Mansa district to hold party rallies, cut his programme short to visit his bereaved uncle.
Meanwhile, people have been pouring in from distant places to pay floral tribute to the departed soul till the filing of this news.

Oxford, May 6 (DNS)- During a talk show on Punjab Radio in London and SIKH TV in Birmingham, Mr. Amanpreet Singh Chhina, an associate of S. Manpreet Singh Badal, encouraged all Indian citizens living abroad (NRIs) to register their vote with the Election Commission of India to bring change in the Indian political system. He requested them to become members of the People’s Party of Punjab and to actively participate in Punjab politics. He emphasised that with NRIs active participation in politics and investment in Punjab, Punjab will soon become a number one state in India as before.
Mr. Chhina has also stressed upon the need to have well-developed and thoughtful policies that should seriously consider the burning issues of Punjab, including Punjab’s debt. He clarified that as on 14 March 2011 Punjab’s debt has reached upto INR 77,000 Cr, which necessitates the Punjab State Government not only to adopt and implement thoughtful policies that can reduce the state’s debt but also increase the income of the state by proper tax collection and other appropriate methods. Ropar, April 27 (DNS)- President of the PPP Manpreet Singh Badal said here that tainted MLAs and leaders whose relatives were involved in criminal cases should resign on moral grounds. “Having such relatives is a matter of shame,” he said.
In town to inaugurate his party’s office, he said six lakh people have already become members of the People’s Party of Punjab (PPP), while 25 lakh membership forms have been distributed, president PPP Manpreet Singh Badal said.
Badal was here to inaugurate party’s office at Ropar. He said PPP’s membership fee was just Re 1 of which 30 P was the cost of the membership slip printed and 70 P went to the company maintaining data of its members. Party was not collecting any separate party fund from its members. “We will have a database of our members. This database will be helpful in election campaigning to be in touch with our members and propagate our activities,” said Badal.
The membership drive would continue till June 30. The party has not targeted any certain number of members. “We just don’t want to increase the number of members for the sake of large head count. We want committed people joining us and working for the cause of Punjab,” he said.
Badal said within next 90 days the party would establish itself with all its wings in place. The membership drive was launched on April 27 at Khatkar Kalan and since then many people have joined hands with the party.
