Abohar, May 29 (DNS)- The police achieved a major success in its drive against anti-national elements when one of its teams arrested one smuggler and seized 6.3 kg of heroin worth Rs 32 crore in the international market from him today.
Police sources said that the heroin, which was in six packets bearing stamps in Urdu, was found in the bag that the nabbed smuggler Sukhwinder Singh alias Pappu was carrying.
The two accomplices of Sukhwinder, identified as Sarwan Singh alias Sama and Balwinder Singh alias Bhinda, managed to escape the police net. Sukhwinder said that heroin was brought from near Hindumalkot town of Rajasthan on the Indo-Pak border.
All three suspects are residents of different villages situated close to the Indo-Pak border under Khalra police station in Tarn Taran district.
The trio has also been involved in different types of crimes, including smuggling, for the past many years and a number of cases have been registered against them in different police stations in the past six years.
Sukhwinder said that he, along with Sarwan and Balwinder, had gone to the Hindumalkot area yesterday morning.
Nirmal Singh Dhillon, IG, Bathinda zone, told mediapersons that the trio, riding a motorcycle without registration number, was intercepted at a check post near Danewala Chowk by a police party led by Darshan Singh.

Abohar, May 23 (DNS)- The irrigation system in a major part of the Malwa region of Punjab nearly collapsed after squall accompanied by rain and hailstorm hit various districts late last evening.
Flow in most canals, distributaries and irrigation minors was affected at many places in Ferozepur, Muktsar, Mansa and Bathinda districts in the Malwa region bringing the supply to the agricultural and domestic sectors to a complete halt.
Official sources said that Bathinda distributary, Teona distributary, Behman distributary, Rai Ke feeder, Phul distributary, Pakka distributary, Kotla branch, Fazilka distributary, Lambi distributary, Malukpur distributary and Sukhchain distributary got breached after trees, uprooted by the strong winds, choked the flow of water yesterday evening.
The other irrigation channels which developed breaches included Bhagsar minor, Mollianwali minor, Punjaba minor, Ramsra minor, Aazamwala minor, Abohar minor, Daulatpura, Chappianwali minor, Doomwali minor and Mile 83 minor.
Officials of the Irrigation Department are been finding it difficult to reach the spots where these blockages and breaches had taken place as uprooted trees have also blocked the roads.
However, timely intervention by officials of the Irrigation Department prevented a breach in the Gang canal. Uprooted trees on the four bridges of the Gang canal were being cleared by the officials concerned.

Abohar, April 6 (DNS)- At least 50 persons were taken ill after taking food at the end the fast on the first day of Navratras last night. Assistant Civil Surgeon Dr DP Godara said a team led by Dr Yogender Gupta has been sent to Abohar and Fazilka to take samples of ‘singhara’ or ‘darhu’ flour, which was believed to have caused the problem.
Vijay Makkar of Nai Abadi said he had purchased a pack of special “singhara” atta from a shop located near a temple. He and his wife felt uneasy around 2.30 am after they ended the first day’s fast.
Other persons had purchased the flour from different shops, but it is learnt that the supply to most of the shops had been made by a common wholesaler. The staff of the Health Department also visited the wholesalers’ shop to ensure that the stock of the flour was not removed.
